General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM)
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA & ADMISSION PROCEDURE TO THE GNM COURSE :

  • Candidates must be a permanent resident of India.
  • 10+2 with English and must have obtained a minimum of 40% at the qualifying examination and English individually for any recognized board. Candidates are also eligible from State Open School recognized by State Goernment and National Institute of Open School (NIOS) recognized by Central Government. However Science is preferable.
  • Selection Process: As per West Bengal Nursing Council.
  • 10+2 with English having 40% of marks in vocational ANM course from the school recognized by Indian Nursing council.
  • 10+2 with English having 40% of marks in Vocational Stream-Health care Science from a recognized CBSE board/Centre.
  • Age : Candidates must be within the age limit of 17 to 35 years as on 31 December.
  • Candidate should be medically fit.

Nursing education is the professional education for the preparation of nurses to enable them to render professional nursing care to people of all ages, in all phases of health and illness, in a variety of settings. As students develop their education and understanding of general healthcare over the years, they can move on to more specified areas of health- care such as child care, orthopedics, emergency nursing, intensive care and midwifery among other healthcare fields. GNM may work in a variety of healthcare settings within both the public and private healthcare sectors and may operate in hospitals, nursing homes, hospices, the armed forces, community centers, healthcare facilities and college, universities among other healthcare settings.

In addition to bachelor programme, GNM may also choose to continue their education in a post graduate programme where they can earn their masters degree and find work in more prominent position such as management, administration and leadership roles within their profession or they can choose to work in areas related to education, research and development.

The aims of Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery program are :

1. To prepare nurses with a sound educational programme in nursing to enable them to function as efficient members of the health team, beginning with the competencies for first level positions in all kinds of healthcare settings.

2. To help nurses develop an ability to co-operate and co-ordinate with members of the health care team in the prevention of disease, promotion of health and rehabilitation of the sick.

3. To help nurses in their personal and professional development, so that they are able to make maximum contribution to the society as useful and productive individuals, citizens as well as efficient nurses.

4. To serve as a base for further professional education and specialization in nursing.

5. To prepare nurses to keep pace with latest professional and technological developments and use these for providing nursing care service.

Objectives :

1. Demonstrate competency in providing healthcare to individual, sick or well, using nursing process.

  • Assess the nursing need of clients from birth to death.
  • Plan and carry out appropriate action to meet nursing needs.
  • Provide effective nursing care for maintaining of best possible level of health in all aspects.
  • Promote self care in people under their care.
  • Apply problem solving techniques in nursing practice.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of nursing care.

2. Apply knowledge from the humanities, biological and behavioral sciences in functioning as a nurse.

3. Function effectively with members of the health team and community applying the knowledge of human relations and communication skills in her work.

4. Participate as a member of the health team in delivery of curative, preventive, promoting and rehabilitative healthcare service.

5. Mobilize community resources and their involvement in working with the communities.

6. Demonstrate use of ethical values in their personal and professional life.

7. Demonstrate interest in activities of professional organization.

8. Recognize the need for continuing education for professional development.

9. Demonstrate basic skills in teaching patients and giving nursing care to them.

10. Demonstrate basic skills in administration and leadership while working with other members of healthcare team and community.

11. Assist in research activities.

COURSE CURRICULUM :

The Curriculum and the Syllabus is designed as per the guideline of West Bengal Nursing Council & Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi.

ATTENDANCE :

90% attendance in Theory (irrespective of the kind of absence) and 100% attendance in practical (clinical area) are necessary for completion of the course.

CERTIFICATION :

Diploma by the West Bengal Nursing Council, West Bengal Government will be issued only after successful completion of the GNM course.

MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION :

The medium of instruction is English.

VACATION :

1. Students shall be granted 30 days' vacation in each calendar year as per guideline of Indian Nursing Council and West Bengal Nursing Council, West Bengal.

2. The students shall be entitled to 10 days of Medical Leave (if sick) and 7 days of Study Leave (prior to council examination).

3. Whenever a student leaves the premises of the College on account of vacations /leave or any other reason, parent/local guardian shall take full responsibility of their ward till return to the School.

STUDENT NURSES ASSOCIATION (SNA) :

This is an organization under the Trained Nurses' Association of India. A student Nurse of any school of Nursing recognized by INC is eligible to become a member of the Student Nurses Associa- tion of India. SNA unit is responsible for the selection and participation of the students for the State and National level programs and competitions.

HOW TO PAY ADMISSION/ SCHOOL FEES :

Fees can be paid through online mode payable to College Account only.

COMMENCEMENT OF THE COURSE :

As per West Bengal Nursing Council Notification.

HOSTEL FACILITY :

Hostel shall be provided to all the students with facilities of safe drinking water, uninterrupted electricity supply, transport facility etc. There shall be a common Hostel Mess facility with healthy and balanced diet. The Mess shall be managed by the Mess Staff under the overall direction and guidance of Warden & Mess Committee having representatives of the students.

COMMENCEMENT OF THE COURSE :

The girl's hostel is housed within the main School campus. The rooms are well ventilated and spacious.
